Away we go

MB, the MoB, and I are off to Minneapolis until next Saturday.
MB has to go for the church convention.
MoB is going to Superior, WI to visit cousins and reminisce about living there more years ago than I want to think about.
I am going because I don't want to stay home.
There may be some posts here.
It won't be a tourism thing.

We savor some dates

Yesterday was one of those anniversaries we remember every now and again.
It was on June 23, 1961 I actually took the oath and joined the Navy.
The recruiter drove my buddy and I to San Francisco, where we joined up with about 14 others.
The Navy turned us loose in the city for the day.
We met up again at 3rd and Townsend streets (about a block from where AT&T Park is now) to catch the Southern Pacific passenger train to LA.

It was the best accommodations I had while in the Navy.
We all were in a sleeping car with separate roomettes.

In LA we transferred to the Santa Fe Railroad's San Diegan.
When we arrived at San Diego we were crammed into a van and life, and we knew it, changed forever.

Would I change anything?
. . . Nah!

Still more

Gets the blood moving in the morning, huh?

Thursday, June 21, 2018

Grrrrr!

I've settled a little now.
It's been a couple of days/

So . . .    there I was* pretty much minding my own business.
I drove the MoB** to an appointment with her Orthopedist in East Sacramento, near Midtown.
It was a little after 11am.
The office is located in a medical clinic just off the Capitol City Freeway.
There is only valet parking available, unless you want to walk for blocks, which will stress the MoB, besides she has a placard which entitles her to park free.

Evidently everyone and their cousin had appointments for 11:30am.
There was a queue in the street waiting to even enter the lines (there were two) for parking.
Slowly we advanced about two cars at a time toward the entrance.
It seems only one of the lines was actually moving.
We reached the point where we would actually turn into the facility.
Cars were now actually moving a little more quickly.
I stayed on the street so as not to block the sidewalk.
The MoB and I watched as the valet came up to the car in front of us, wrote out the parking voucher, opened the door for the driver, went around and assisted the passenger, removed a wheelchair from the rear seat area, and sent the occupants on to their appointment.
He then wrote some more information, returned to the driver side, and attempted to move the vehicle.
We then watched as he raced after the driver and her passenger to retrieve the key to start the vehicle.

It's good that he was quick, because, had they already entered the elevator, he might not have found them until they returned for the car and a lot of people would have been really late for their appointments.

I discovered later that the reason the second line wasn't moving is because someone else had gone off with their keys.

Reminder: it's T Street exit [that's another story].

Monday update can be like that

A couple of old posts showed up in the Pageviews for today.
They're from May 2013, a frustrating time for which I can do without reminders.
I am sorely tempted to make those posts unavailable.
Then I am reminded that there are many things in life that are extremely frustrating.
Also, that most of those things have bureaucracy written on them . . .    somewhere.

Blogging has become less fun.
Just ask Cranky Old Man.
"Are we having fun yet?"
Part of the challenge is there are subjects I will not broach.
It's because they're troll bait.
The trolls are the bane of most bloggers.
The other part is our ISP.
They're still providing 20th Century technology for a system that requires more broadband.
When the kids show up with their little tablets and e-readers the wifi goes away.
The Echo, where Alexa lives, interferes with the signal to the PC.
I would hard wire the PC to the router, but let's just say that's not an option.
It does not help that everyone on the street is in the same boat and all of the wifi enabled equipment senses half of their routers.
Anyway, there is tons of interference.

There is one other option.
It involves someone digging up the street or people's yards.
That's not going to happen.

The other day I about screamed out loud while reading an otherwise interesting, intelligent post on fb.
The party who posted completely lost me when they wrote "would of" instead of would've.
About the only thing more egregious would be to write "would a."
can you hear the shrieks?

Two men

I celebrate on Father's Day.

My father
My dad
It's nice to remember them as young men [well, one just never got old].

Sometimes I repost

White Space
White Space
I was just looking through a bunch of other blogs... none of which are listed on this one... and I came across one where the blogger was absolutely gushing about how thrilled she was to have received some recognition for her blog and that the number of hits had doubled.
Then on the very next post she was having second thoughts because she was afraid that her postings wouldn't meet the readers expectations. I'm sorry. I don't get it!!! That is unless the goal of the blog is to have a huge readership and maintain or increase the level of readership.
My goal for this blog is to entertain... ME!

Another untitled post

Last year around this time I posted something about being retired since 2002.
Those weren't my exact words, but that was the gist.
When I looked at the post again, yesterday, I realized I was off by a year.
It was 2001, and I didn't exactly retire.
That's what my immediate supervisor told everyone.

The topic of retirement comes up because that's what MB is up to.
Her replacement has been hired and started this last week.
That means the MB has been bringing her belongings home from work.
We have to fit them in with all of the other things that have been added to the household over the past year and a half.
And yet there is still more up north that needs to be transported . . .    somewhere?

There are still some photos, somewhere, that I have want to post.
We shall see if I have time to download and detail them.

I don't do politics well.
I am somewhere between Attila the Hun and Mother Theresa.
This last primary here was really something.
I wish I had saved copies of the ballot.
There were so many candidates for Governor that it was hard to decide which was the least offensive in the bunch.
That was only one office.
The entire ballot was three pages printed on both sides.

Next election, in November, will be even more interesting.
Californians will get to decide, again*, if they want to split divide balkanize the state.
Even if the measure passes, it will be up to others to determine that it will happen.

from the usual source
That's not what's on the ballot but it explains a lot about the situation here.
There's a lot of unhappiness about representative government in this state.
The rich metro areas dominate the process.
The rural areas feel they're under-served and misunderstood.

Housing is another whole entire issue.
I'm not even gonna go there.
maybe it's time to move

Catching up

If you are a f/b friend, you already know whassup.
We went to Washington [I posted a map last Thursday.
I made several attempts to post, using the tablet, over the weekend, with no success.
Then, we drove home on Monday, leaving at 4:00am so MB could attend her final council meeting as administrator.

This is the route we took.

I will say that the times are based on no stops for food or other necessary things.
Most of the passengers were kept occupied by videos played through the vehicle's entertainment system.
Those riding in the front seats could only listen.

This post would have come sooner, but there was no motivation.
I did come to one conclusion on the trip.
The difficulty in getting through Portland has much to do with the transportation system there.
Everyone uses it most of the time, but occasionally they get in their vehicles and drive.
Most of them seem to have forgotten how.
I am research alternate routes.
One of those routes has ocean views.

No day at the beach

74 years ago today troops landed at Normandy to finish liberating Europe from the Nazis.
Take a moment and remember those men.

It isn't exactly a vacation

MB, the MoB, and I, along with another adult and two kids are driving to Seattle on Thursday to attend the high school graduation of a grandson.
I did this same [well, the general direction] road trip, solo, for a different grandson, two years ago.
I didn't leave at zero dark thirty, either.
But, if we arrive early enough, we shall see the granddaughter's band concert.

One advantage this drive has over the last time is there are three drivers to share the duties.
If I play my hand right, I will miss the opportunity to drive in Portlandia, Lewis-McChord, Tacoma, and Bellevue [yeah, probably not now].
should prove interesting

I had a plan

There was a grand plan for a post this morning.

Operative word is was.

I will say I am totally surprised at the number of Pageviews last month.

How did I miss this?

"Your language preference for Blogger can be changed in your Google Account settings"

The post title showed up in a notice from Blogger.
I clicked the link.
I've changed my language preference to Pirate [yeah, that's a thing].

We'll see what happens.
