I really was going to post yesterday...
So now I am finding myself sorely tempted to take the "verification" word and use it in whatever comments I may make on others' blogs.
Can you imagine using a word like blemedin or ticit? I am talking about using them in NORMAL conversation, not creating something specifically to fit them in.

What have we learned in 2 millennia?
"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance."

It seems Aretha Franklin has presented the President and Mrs. Obama some gifts. Her grandson gave gifts to the Obama girls.
No, the hat wasn't among the gifts.

...and the mutations are awesome II
Well, I found out this morning that the hat, if it wasn't already famous and not for sale, would cost about $500. It's a one of a kind made specifically for the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.
But if you want, you can plunk down $179 to get "the next best thing."

This started out as a comment to another post
Probably by all rights this should be over at R&M
Food... and what we call it... is at least as interesting as language.
Well of course it must be. We have a whole television network devoted to it.
I don't think the language network would work out. That's too bad too. English speakers would be well served by having as intimate an understanding of the words we use as we do of the foods we eat.

I wish I could think on my feet like that
When I was talking about cursing and swearing over at R&M, I didn't take into account the more colorful curses that many times include metaphorical references, many times to goats and camels. These, we find in our western culture, humorous at times.
I bring this up only as a lead in to the following:
You've Been Saving That Up All Day, Haven't You?
Young male professional: So no, you're wrong about that point, we're going to do it my way.
Young female professional: I hope you get a diaper rash so bad that you start walking like King Kong raped you!

Steak & Kidney Pudding?
Below is an image of what is purported to be steak and kidney pudding. I will leave it to the Brighton Pensioner to say if this is an accurate image.

This appears to be quite similar to a burrito, except that it is made with a pie crust instead of a tortilla and it doesn't have rice and beans.

Gourmet weekend?
- Fish and Chips on Friday - they were good, but I would really have enjoyed the ones from the Sierra Nevada brewery. Oh boy, that's something to look forward to.
- Homemade French Dip (drip?) sandwiches on Saturday
- Mac 'n Cheese last night - not from a box either and there are enough leftovers for a couple of more meals.

WT...?
Well it wasn't me after all, 'cause I didn't do a thing except go watch TV, eat dinner, do some reading, play with the electronic crossword puzzle thingy and get a good night's sleep.
Then lo and behold, after I finally was able to connect to the Interweb [that's another grumble], my settings for the fonts are back where I wan them [sort of].

Discomposed
That's what it is!!!
No, not what has happened to the blog, but what it has made me feel. I still trying to figure out if it is something I did... which is the most likely scenario... or if it is a glitch somewhere else.
Seeing that no other blogs seem to be suffering from shrunken post headers a other signs that anyone has been monkeying around in their html, I am going to judge that I did something that mucked up the works.
Ironically, everything looks fine in the preview window.
Anyway, if things go back to normal [did I really use the word normal?], you will know that I figured it out...

Speaking of my imagination
Is it just me, or has the appearance of this blog gone a little haywire?
Yeah, I'll admit to tweaking it on a regular basis, but not to how it looks now... at least not intentionally.
.
I hate it when that happens
So I have two topics bouncing around upstairs. I don't consider either of them of them serious enough take over to my more serious blog [there's still another topic for over there].
- Is about food and a major debate I am having with myself about whether I'd prefer macaroni and cheese or fish and chips for dinner tonight. Of course it probably really doesn't much matter what my preference is anyway.
- Is about how I accidentally discovered that another account gives me those neat word verification goodies that we've been playing with for the past few days. Now I won't have to go out and harvest them while I am logged off.

A little side entertainment
One of the features available to those of us who "allow" comments on our blogs is a word verification, which is supposed to suppress spamming of our sites.
What makes it so interesting is that many times they are almost real words that cause a mind like mine to imagine all manner of mischief.
I am tempted to require that anyone commenting to post on my blogs use the verification word in their comment. The only drawback to that is that I would probably then receive no comments.

I don't get it
It is really entertaining to peruse various blogs. Some are just a post or two and then a long, long dormancy. Others are as regular as clockwork. It seems that a large number of them are folks who are looking for others to reassure them. Some so blatant as to even make a plea indirectly with a line like, "I am not a writer."
Well you can rest assured that that is not even close to what I am doing. I am a reader and I don't need anyone to tell me.

Clarification
After my first post yesterday, I was asked whether or not I was enjoying the books written by a certain local author.
Let me assure you that my post only coincidentally comes at a time when I am reading those books.

I must be missing something
.
when words aren't enough
It's funny. There are some authors whose books I will snap up as soon as I see them. There are others who write well, but the stories have gotten stale because they're formulaic. I don't read them any longer. Then there are still others whose style doesn't hold my interest [meaning in some cases that I never finished the book]. They are extremely rare.
I realize that this post is well above the normal standards for this blog. That's because the reading list is here and I am not about to move it now.

Seriously -
Why did we stop that acronym thing for STD?
I think it was kinda fun because it was spontaneous and because I still have more terms for the acronym:
- Society for Theological Discussion
- Subcutaneous Tissue Disorder

By popular request
It was to be the vacation of a lifetime, a cruise to end all cruises. Mabel had been saving and looking forward to it for almost ten years. She had saved enough that she would have to share a cabin. She was really going to enjoy herself.
The ship wasn't even close to being one of the larger cruise ships, but it had all of the amenities and activities of the others. Food and drink were available 24/7. There was a casino and every evening after dinner there was entertainment.
The first night at sea there was a trained bird act. It was an absolutely astonishing performance... with one exception. There was one single parrot whose only purpose seemed to be to decorate the stage and hurl insults at audience members. Before long the parrot seemed to be taking particular delight in antagonizing Mabel, probably because she could not ignore the parrot's gibes. Mabel did not enjoy herself that evening.
The next day, while wandering about the ship, she found herself again face to face with the parrot in the ship's souvenir shop. Again the parrot laid into her with the insults, showing no mercy. Mabel hurried off in a snit. Before long it seemed like every time Mabel turned around, the parrot was there throwing another insult. Mabel was about ready to abandon the cruise at the next opportunity.
Fate interceded before an opportunity presented itself. The ship ran into some large underwater obstruction and began sinking almost immediately. Mabel was unable to reach a lifeboat so she jumped overboard and began swimming. Before long she came upon some flotsam that she felt she could use to remain afloat. Much to her chagrin, she found that the parrot was already roosting on this very same debris.
Immediately upon spying her the parrot squawked. “How is yer ass?”
Oh, shut up!” Replied Mabel, gruffly.
So's mine!” Said the parrot. “It must be the salt water.”
about to whom we say "shut up!"

Education Entertainment
Miss Sally Edwards is a highly esteemed third grade teacher at Jacksboro Elementary. In an effort to prepare her students for the all-important TAKS test, she compiled an exam consisting of 20 questions, which she administered to her class last Tuesday.
The exam purposely covered a broad array of topics.
I call your attention to question # 11, which simply read:
LIST, IN ANY ORDER, THE FOUR SEASONS:
1. ________ 2. ________ 3.________ 4. ________
Now, could you possibly imagine that 67% of the students gave the following answer?

1. DOVE SEASON 2. DEER SEASON 3. DUCK SEASON 4. TURKEY SEASON
GOD BLESS THE KIDS OF RURAL TEXAS !!!
how could they not get it right?
