Just routine stuff. . .
The big concern yesterday was the weather.
Some of you are aware there's been a dearth of precipitation here.
As much as we need and want rain, yesterday morning would've been most inconvenient.
For the past three or four days the local weather guys had been touting a storm.
Their thoughts were it would arrive early Sunday.
That was is direct conflict with the annual Lions Club Easter egg hunt.
We conduct it at the park every year on Easter Sunday morning. . . no matter what.
The logistics of the thing are pretty simple.
Preparations are begun with getting permissions to use certain areas of the park and the the use of the kitchen in the community center is obtained.
Supplies and tools are inventoried and, where necessary, supplemented.
Eggs are procured, cooked and colored.
Arrangements are made to store the colored eggs.
Then early on Easter Sunday morning Lions and volunteers gather at the park to "hide" the eggs.
The question was whether we would beat the rain.
According to the prognosticators we would not.
We took it on faith that somehow we'd pull it off anyway.
Two years ago we stood in the parking lot and handed out flats of eggs because it was too wet.
Yesterday, it was still dry when we arrived on site at a little before 8am.
It was still dry when the youngsters arrived.
Then, just as the hordes were released to gather the booty, we felt the first drops fall from the sky.
The eggs were scooped up withing minutes.
The raindrops were still at a minimum.
Then as we drove away it became necessary to turn on windshield wipers.
We dodged a bullet.
Yesterday was also the first Sunday of the month.
For a change I wasn't part of the crew serving breakfast at the Senior Center.
Instead, I was a patron.
Breakfast is always better when someone else fixes it.
Oh, yeah.
Officially there was .16inch of rain.
That was at the Redding airport, four miles north of here, where it was of a short duration.
It rained lightly most of the morning.
When the rain started falling in earnest, sometime around 1:30, it was like a bucket had been overturned.
There was a tremendous thunder storm.
When it was done the rain gauge read .49in.,
The thunder continued through the afternoon, but there was no more rain.
Into the evening I observed lightning off to the east in the mountains.
I hope there was rain along with it.
more rain is due tomorrow
